On June 15, 2022, Rodrigo Chaves, Costa Rica’s President, and the Minister of Health, Joselyn Chacón, signed a decree so the Ministry of Health could homologate or recognize the sanitary registrations of drugs, awarded by the regulatory authorities who are members of the International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), which could increase the supply of medicines in the country and eventually reduce the high prices, the same decree entered into force on January 2023, so users can already apply for it.
The Minister of Health, Josselyn Chacón Madrigal, said that “The sanitary registrations of medicines homologated with the regulatory authorities of the ICH guarantee a level of protection and risk prevention equal or superior to that allowed by Costa Rican institutions and regulations on the matter, which constitutes a strategy to guarantee the access and availability of quality, safe and effective products”.
This recognition must be requested before the Ministry of Health through the platform registered it www.registrelo.go.cr, and it is estimated that the deadline for the processing of the homologation requests is 30 working days.
