As of 2021, anyone wishing to travel to any of the Schengen Zone countries must have an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) permit. This decision will affect more than 60 countries, including all those that make up the Central American region.

“This is a fully electronic system that authorizes and tracks visitors from countries that do not require a visa to enter the Schengen area. In some ways, it is similar to the Electronic System for US Travel Authorization (ESTA), which is used for a similar purpose”, explains the official ETIAS website.

The objective of this system is to carry out a more detailed control of the income to Europe with the aim of confronting the threats of terrorism and immigration.

To successfully obtain an ETIAS authorization, the traveler must meet the following ETIAS requirements before completing their online application:

  • a valid passport
  • An email address
  • A debit or credit card
